GIG CALENDAR

It’s a funny thing, comedy. And for stand-up, it’s seldom funnier than in the hands of an accomplished Pom or two.

Brian and his “lovely assistant”, Krysstal (do they have other names?) are a well known English couple, who provide an entertaining 45 minutes or so of wonderful silliness, some cute songs, some political incorrect-ness, some sick vomit and poo jokes and a lot of originality. It is all done with that intangible panache, subtlety and ability to laugh at one’s self that is quintessential to British humour.

This version is based on
a lot of puns, unexpected twists and word plays, and lots of double entendre and sexual in-your-end-o, liberally peppered with the F word, so it’s hardly for children or the prim. The demonstration of a didjeri-dildo is a remarkable addition to a fairly convincing attempt at an Aussie country song.

If there is a theme, although this is not constant or overwhelming, it is about depression and how things couldn’t really get worse. Yet even this is made funny.
Brian shows he is a master of timing, and Krysstal’s inconsistency (being sometimes complete bimbo, and at others a sophisticated wannabe radio hostess) can be forgiven because of her versatility as a performer.

All in all, this pair’s ability to engage a very small audience is impressive. All sixteen of us laughed until we stopped. There are more comedy shows in town - often playing to very small audiences - than you can shake a what-not at. This one deserves a bigger one.

RIP IT UP REVIEW:

Brian and Krysstal: Whinging Puns
Ambassadors Hotel, Fri Feb 26
Puns – word plays based on deliberate misunderstanding of words, Poms – lily-white people allergic to the sun who delight in puns. Brian and Krysstal have
well honed comedy skills, good comic timing and plenty of experience playing to an audience. Krysstal may act otherwise, but she provides a good foil for Brian’s antics and proves her worth and talents in the finale, playing many instruments in a manner that only a true comic could properly exploit. Krysstal’s battery operated tuning fork exciter is entertaining. The BBC4 take-off was the highlight of the show for me; good fodder with some wonderful mirth. Solid comedy in a self-deprecating British flavour – well worth a look.
Final Word: Disambiguation.
